Roadtrip in Romania: Dobrogea and Danube Delta

Book Now!

Even though it is a spectacular and accessible area, south-eastern Romania is not very famous among tourists. Most of them prefer to go on the coast, passing through Dobrogea with speed. We recommend a contrasting holiday to two different parts of Eastern Romania: the oldest region of Romania and the new and evolving land Danube Delta.

Măcin – a hiking trip for everyone

Macin Mountains are the oldest in the country and have been eroded over the decades by water and wind, and now they are only 400 meters tall. But that does not make them less spectacular. Book a day to hike to the highest peak Tutuiatu 467 meters. Nearby there is a riding school Macin National Park where you can pay for riding lessons.

Lacul Iacobdeal – an oasis in the midst of dryness

Very close to Macin Mountains, Iacobdeal Lake is a surprise to anyone who gets here. In the arid midfield, in the middle of a quarry that has fallen, a colorful lake appeared. It is now surrounded by beautiful cliffs with a strange look. It’s a real pleasure to spend a lazy day here with your family or friends.

Argamum  – a fortress with a view

Strategically located on Cape Dolosman, Argamum Fortress must have had an incredible view hundreds of years ago. Its walls are now ruins but the view over Razim Lake is equally beautiful now. The road to the fortress is accessible by car. We recommend you bring your anti-mosquito spray and a small blanket to sit on by the fortress and enjoy the view.

Enisala Fortress

Just 20 kilometers north from Argamum, Enisala is perhaps the best preserved fortress in the area. The road to the top of the hill where it is located, is an experience in itself.

Sulina, Delta Dunării – the end of the country

To get in Sulina, you must cross the entire Danube Delta. You should drive to Tulcea, leave the car in the parking lot and get into the passenger ship or catamaran. After 3-4 hours you will have reached Sulina, the easternmost point of Romania and of the European Union, where the Danube ends its route through Europe and flows into the Black Sea. Hire a bike (it costs only 15 lei / day) and explore the small town and even go to the beach. Do not forget to try fresh fish dishes and enjoy the sunset on the Danube shore.
